Sleep disturbances are any irregularities resulting from inadequate sleep quality and length.
The most common sleep disorders include insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea and somnambulism (sleepwalking).
Sleep disturbance
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. Insomnia is not an individual disease in itself but a symptom that appears in the course of other diseases. The most common causes of insomnia are psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders (problems falling asleep) or depression (early waking up).
Narcolepsy is a fairly rare disease which symptoms include: excessive sleepiness (the patient is able to fall asleep while performing activities), sudden temporary loss of muscle tone, sleep hallucinations and sleep paralysis (temporary inability to move when awakening).
Sleep apnea syndrome is a disease that results in periodic impairment of airway patency during sleep. The consequences of this are: daytime drowsiness, cardiovascular system disorders, hypertension.
Somnambulism - this is a disorder in which motor activities are performed without full awakening. These episodes usually last about 10 minutes.
Treatment of sleep disorders
In the treatment of insomnia, first of all, it begins with the application of rules related to proper sleep hygiene (airing the room before bedtime, no TV in the bedroom, calming down before bedtime). In case of chronic difficulties, you should see a specialist who will help determine the cause of the disorder.
