Psychosis is a state of mind characterized by the occurrence of disorders in the perception of reality.
A sick person sees and hears things that are not really there. In the course of psychosis, thinking disorders also appear.
Diseases in which psychotic conditions occur include: schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder , reactive psychosis (response to a traumatic situation), and exogenous psychosis (caused by external factors).
Psychotic symptoms
Delusions - these are disorders of thinking consisting in having beliefs that are not reflected in reality. A sick person is convinced of their arguments and does not accept that it may be different. An example of this delusion is the belief that other people can read minds.
Hallucinations - sensual experiences not caused by any real stimulus. A sick person can hear and see things that are not really there.
Causes of psychosis
The cause of psychosis is a disorder of neurotransmitters in the brain. This disorder can be caused by alcohol, psychoactive substances, but also somatic diseases (brain tumor).
Psychosis treatment
The treatment of psychosis is mainly based on the administration of antipsychotic drugs .
Psychotherapy is also used , which is able to help a sick person understand the disease and learn to live with it. Psychotherapy is conducted in a state of remission (extinction of disease symptoms).
