In English, the FOMO abbreviation is fear of missing out. It defines a situation in which a person feels a terrifying fear of missing important information and therefore feels the need to constantly monitor events using a smartphone or computer.
The FOMO syndrome in the age of the Internet and social media is a kind of civilization disease.
Fear of missing out - symptoms
A person struggling with the FOMO syndrome feels anxiety that is difficult to determine , which intensifies when they have no access to the Internet for a long time .
FOMO reveals not only a frequent, nervous glance at the phone to check e- mails or notifications on Facebook , but also the fulfillment of the need to constantly share the acquired information with other Internet users .
Often, for people suffering from FOMO, knowledge about a topic only becomes relevant when it is shared with others.
FOMO - is treatment needed?
FOMO may turn out to be a very big problem when the need to get new information will not allow us to focus on everyday matters, e.g. at work or while studying.
If we feel that we cannot master our "information" needs regardless of our responsibilities, appropriate psychotherapy may be a good solution.
